Degenerations of the dog retina. II. Generalized progressive atrophy of hereditary origin.

چکیده
A SPONTANEOUS degeneration of the retina of the dog, due to a generalized progressive atrophy of the neuroepithelium and called " night blindness " or retinitis pigmentosa of dogs has been known for nearly half a century, since Magnusson's recognition of the syndrome in Gordon Setters in Sweden about 1905 (Magnusson, 1909, 1911, 1917); he considered the condition to be similar to retinitis pigmentosa in man. More recently a somewhat similar syndrome has been reported in Red Irish Setters in England (Hodgman and others, 1949; Parry, 1951). These workers described in detail the clinical stages of the syndrome and presented evidence indicating that the disease was inherited as if determined principally by a recessive autosomal Mendelian factor. The present paper presents data obtained in a series of matings under controlled conditions designed to establish whether or not the syndrome is hereditary, to provide material for detailed histological and electrophysiological studies, and to establish the relationship of the canine syndrome to human retinitis pigmentosa.

Degenerations of the dog retina. VI. Central progressive atrophy with pigment epithelial dystrophy.
THIS syndrome of central progressive atrophy of the retina in which central vision is lost in middle age while peripheral vision is retained until old age is unlike the generalized degenerations of the dog retina described in the preceding papers of this series, in two principal particulars: the distribution of the degeneration and the occurrence in the fundus of pigment foci which may be seen ...
متن کاملClinical studies on progressive retinal atrophy in 31 dogs
During a 2-year period, 31 cases of a hereditary retinal degeneration in dogs bred in India were found mainly suspected for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) with typical history of initial nyctalopia followed by hemeralopia. Out of 31 PRA suspected dogs, 8 dogs (26%) were from the age group of 1-5 years, 15 (48%) 6-10 years and the rest (26%) 11-15 years. The most predominant breed was Spitz (...
متن کاملGyrate Atrophy of the Choroid and Retina: A Case Report
Introduction Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina is a metabolic disorder, which is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. Although gyrate atrophy is rare, it is concerning as it results in blindness. It is characterized by hyperornithinemia, retinal atrophy, leads to progressive myopia and tunnel vision,...
متن کاملCell based therapies in retinal diseases
Background Degenerative retinal diseases, including age related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and hereditary retinal dystrophies are major causes of blindness. The principal defect in these diseases is cell loss which is amenable to both cell based neuroprotective and neuroregenerative therapies. To briefly review the lines of research and potential candidates for cell based therapies among ...
متن کاملProgressive retinal atrophy in the Abyssinian cat.
Eight cases of hereditary progressive retinal atrophy in Abyssinian cats in Denmark are reported. Pedigree studies indicate direct lineage to affected cats of the same breed in Sweden. The disease is bilateral, progressive, and of the generalized type, and ultimately leads to blindness.
